Attention 8th Grade Families & Future High School Athletes
Students planning to condition or try out for a high school sport next year should be aware of a new state law requiring an ECG screening for all incoming 9th graders before athletic participation. This requirement goes into effect July 1. To support our students, we are sharing two free ECG screening opportunities (see attached flyers). One event at Strawberry Crest is specifically for students interested in cheerleading, offering an earlier option since cheer tryouts begin July 8 at most schools. Additional free ECG screening dates will be available countywide during the first week of June. Take advantage of these opportunities to be ready for high school athletics!

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Mr. Nicholas “Nick” Leone, our beloved 8th grade history teacher at Stewart Middle School.
Mr. Leone dedicated 22 remarkable years to teaching at Stewart, beginning his career with us as a reading teacher before moving into his true passion—history. His commitment to excellence, his calm strength, and the care he showed for every student made an enduring impact on our school community.
Before becoming an educator, Mr. Leone lived through one of our nation’s most difficult moments. As a survivor of the September 11, 2001 attack in New York City, he demonstrated extraordinary courage. In the midst of chaos, he carried a woman across the Brooklyn Bridge to safety—an act of heroism that reflected the character he brought with him every day into our classrooms and hallways.
Nick Leone was more than a teacher; he was a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. His presence brought warmth, wisdom, and a sense of purpose to Stewart Middle School. He was deeply loved by students, staff, and families, and his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and to all who were touched by his life.
