Tonya Colston

Welcome to Young Middle Magnet School, home of the Buffalos! I am thrilled to be the new principal of Young Middle Magnet School and look forward to meeting our students and families. I am excited to be working with the amazing teachers and dedicated staff to deliver a high-quality education for all students. Our school’s vision is for all students to be creative, encouraged and committed to excellence everyday “no excuses” Together, we shape a future where innovation meets purpose, and every student becomes the best version of themselves... Family and community involvement are keys to our success. There will be many opportunities for families and community members to support our school. If you are interested, I encourage you to register as a volunteer, serve on our School Advisory Committee, join our Parent-Teacher Organization, and/or become a business partner. There will be several events planned for the upcoming school year. We encourage our families and community to become involved.

Programs

The STEM Cadre elective provides students with real-world problems that they design hands-on solutions to through the engineering design process. This course encompasses rocketry, drones, robotics, coding, 3D printing, and more. Beginning American Sign Language (ASL) students will learn about comparing and contrasting Deaf culture with their own culture. Advanced students will focus on building their vocabulary of signs and acquiring knowledge of the natural alphabet and basic structure and grammar of the language. Students learn the language through lessons presented in context with activities. Cultural awareness and cross-cultural adjustment skills are major components of this course. Computer Science (CS) Discoveries aims to empower students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem-solving, and fun. CS Discoveries takes a broad lens to computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, web development, design, and data.
