attendance

At Rodgers Middle Magnet School, our goal is simple: 95% attendance every day. We know that families want the very best for their children, and one of the most important factors in a student's success is something that may seem simple: being present at school every day.

Attendance is about much more than avoiding missed assignments. Every school day provides students with opportunities to learn new skills, build friendships, participate in discussions, receive teacher feedback, and engage in experiences that cannot always be recreated after an absence.

Research consistently shows a strong connection between attendance and academic achievement. The U.S. Department of Education notes that students who are chronically absent, meaning they miss 10% or more of the school year, are at significantly greater risk of academic difficulties. Missing school means missing valuable instructional time and can have long-term effects on student learning and achievement. [ed.gov]

The Impact of Just Three Days

Many families are surprised to learn how quickly missed time adds up.

At Rodgers, students receive approximately five hours of instruction each day. That means:

3 Days Absent = 15 Hours of Learning Lost

That is approximately:

  • 900 minutes of instruction

  • Multiple lessons in English Language Arts

  • Multiple Math lessons

  • Multiple Science investigations

  • Multiple Social Studies discussions

  • Elective classes, projects, labs, and collaborative activities

Even when teachers provide make-up work, students can miss important classroom conversations, hands-on learning opportunities, and immediate feedback from their teachers.

Attendance and Student Achievement

National research continues to demonstrate that students who attend school regularly achieve at higher levels academically.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), often called the Nation's Report Card, has found an association between increased absenteeism and declines in student achievement. Researchers have emphasized that regular attendance is critical to academic recovery and success. [nagb.gov]

In a long-term study of middle school students, researchers found that chronic absence was associated with lower math achievement and significantly reduced the likelihood of graduating from high school on time. Students with high levels of absenteeism were less likely to successfully complete high school than their peers who attended regularly. [pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Attendance Builds More Than Academics

Regular attendance also helps students:

  • Develop positive relationships with teachers and peers

  • Build confidence and independence

  • Participate in extracurricular activities and school events

  • Feel connected and engaged with their school community

  • Establish habits that support future success

Hillsborough County Public Schools recognizes that regular attendance is essential to positive academic outcomes and to creating a strong school culture. The district identifies chronic absenteeism as missing approximately 18 days during a school year and emphasizes the importance of reducing absenteeism for all students.

Make the Difference

Families are our most important partners in promoting attendance. Here are some ways you can help:

✅ Establish a consistent bedtime routine.

✅ Ensure students arrive at school on time each day.

✅ Schedule appointments outside school hours whenever possible.

✅ Communicate with the school when attendance concerns arise.

✅ Encourage students to attend every day unless they are genuinely ill.

✅ Talk with your child about what they are learning and why attendance matters.

Research has also shown that strong communication and partnerships between schools and families can improve attendance rates and help students stay engaged in learning. [files.eric.ed.gov]
