From December 19 through January 5, students can record their reading in Beanstack (Visit hub.hcps.net and click on the Beanstack icon to get started). The schools with the highest participation will earn a Reader Leader trophy and $500 toward library books! Winners will be announced during Celebrate Literacy Week, January 26 through 30.

Yesterday, our Dowdell team had the incredible opportunity to participate in Everglades Literacy Training, led by the amazing Tate Vangellow from the Everglades Foundation.
The session was hands-on, engaging, and packed with practical strategies we can bring directly into our classrooms. Teachers explored real-world Everglades science, experimented with interactive activities, and gained valuable tools to help students connect with Florida’s ecosystems in meaningful and exciting ways.
We’re grateful to Tate for leading such an inspiring session and for helping us strengthen our Environmental & Animal Science Magnet Program. Our students will absolutely benefit from the passion, expertise, and resources shared.
At Dowdell Middle Magnet, we’re committed to helping students GO WILD! To Wonder, Impact, Link, and Defend, and this training is another step toward bringing authentic environmental learning to life.

Dowdell is collecting pumpkins for composting — so you don’t have to throw them away!
We’ll have bins out front where you can drop off clean pumpkins (no paint, glitter, candles, or plastic).
Just toss them in — we’ll take care of the rest.

Special Guests at Dowdell’s Environmental Magnet Class!
This week, our Environmental Magnet students had a wonderful visit from the Florida Aquarium Outreach Team! Ms. Diana brought along three incredible animal ambassadors for a hands-on learning experience:
Major Jack – a Gulf Coast Box Turtle with a big personality
Sully – a curious Skink
Echo – a fascinating Hognose Snake known for their mimicking behaviors
Students learned about each animal’s habitat, adaptations, and role in our local ecosystems. Experiences like this bring our learning to life and inspire future environmental stewards!

The Dowdell Middle Magnet Color Run brought our school community together for a vibrant afternoon of fun, and WILD school spirit! Students and teachers ran, walked, and danced through bursts of colorful powder as they celebrated Dolphin pride. Laughter, music, and bright colors filled the air—making it an unforgettable event that showcased the energy and unity of our Dolphin community.

Help our students "Get Caught Reading!" by creating a colorful and engaging bookmark that celebrates our district-wide literacy initiative.
Educators and students in all grade levels can design a 2.5" x 7" bookmark for a chance to have their artwork professionally printed and shared across schools!
Entries are due to your school’s art teacher by EOD next Friday, Oct. 31. Winners will be announced in December!
