Students focused on the role of keystone species, with a special emphasis on the gopher tortoise. They learned about tortoise anatomy, sex identification, and key physiological differences between tortoises and sea turtles. Walking the grounds, students identified active gopher tortoise burrows and discussed why this species is threatened and why its presence is so vital to the health of Florida ecosystems. All of the educators at Camp Bayou are volunteers, and we are incredibly grateful for the time, knowledge, and passion they share with our students. Experiences like this help young people see science as living, local, and meaningful, and hopefully inspire them to become thoughtful stewards of the environment.
