Today we were thrilled to welcome Mr. Matt from the Florida Aquarium to Dowdell. Students learned about the fascinating differences between alligators, crocodiles, and gharials, with a special focus on our own Florida native - the American alligator. Mr. Matt led an exciting deep dive into the importance of alligators in the ecosystem, alligator anatomy, cleared up common myths, and, most importantly, taught students essential alligator safety practices for living in Florida.
Top 3 Alligator Safety Rules
Do not feed alligators.
It’s illegal, and alligators are smart - feeding them teaches them to associate people with food and lose their natural fear of humans.
Never touch baby alligators.
They may look adorable, but young alligators stay with their mothers until about age 2. If a baby feels threatened, it will call for its mother - and she will respond.
Keep a safe distance.
Always stay well back from any alligator, whether in the water or on land. Respect their space to keep both you and the animal safe. Do not swim with alligators.
Our students were able to meet a baby alligator called Bayou, and were so excited to get to touch Bayou. Students walked away informed, engaged, and energized about Florida’s incredible wildlife.
Thank you Mr. Matt, and the Florida Aquarium!
