Black History Month, with its roots beginning in 1926, is an annual celebration of African American achievements. During this time, we pause to reflect on the numerous contributions African Americans have made throughout history to our local community and our nation. This year, our theme will be centered around Celebrating African Americans and the Arts.
Each school within Hillsborough County will be celebrating Black History Month throughout February in a variety of creative ways. As a District, we will participate in initiatives and provide resources to assist schools with their preparation for a successful month of activities. Using the hashtag #HCPSBlackHistory2024, our schools will highlight activities related to Black History Month.
Some of the resources our teachers will share include:
- The history of Black History Month
- Suggested people/events at each grade level for students to learn about, with links to websites, lessons, and primary/secondary sources
- Suggested booklists
- Suggested websites
- Suggested readings with myON for students to read and learn about Black History
- HCPS and Department of Education Contest Information
