Head Start

  • Program Description
    Head Start is a federally funded, comprehensive, child development program that encompasses all aspects of a child's development and learning. The program serves children ages 3 to 4 years old. Eligibility is based on income. Upon entry into the program, each eligible child will receive required screenings to determine their overall health status, developmental strengths, needs and areas of concern such as the possibility of a serious delay or disability. Ten percent of Head Starts’ enrollment are children with disabilities.

    Eligible Students
    To be eligible for Head Start services, a child must be at least 3 or 4 years old by September 1st of the year entering public school or turning 5 after September 1st of the year entering public school.

    Classroom Models
    Head Start

    • 3 and 4-year-olds
    • Classroom staff consists of a Florida Certified Teacher and a Paraeducator (teacher assistant)

    Application Timeline
    HCPS Head Start encourages families to apply January through May prior to the start of the school year. However, Head Start accepts applications all year long.

    Head Start models follow the regular bell schedules.
