• Family & Consumer Science

In Family and Consumer Science students will have the opportunity to take Early Childhood Education OR Family and Consumer Science (FACS) Essentials.

In the Early Childhood Education classes students will be able to serve as student teachers in our on-site Little Eagles Preschool that runs Tuesday through Friday from mid- September until the end of April. Through this program students that meet certain criteria will be given the chance to enroll in career dual enrollment and while there is no cost or travel time involved, it does provide students with a chance to earn a weighted GPA and college credit to be used at Brewster Technical College. We also have an articulation agreement with HCC that allows students that are program completers in high school to enter HCC declaring their major program of study to be an Associate in Science degree for Early Childhood Education. In doing this they will begin their college experience with 9 credit hours. Finally, throughout their high school career in ECE, students work towards earning an industry certification called the Child Development Associate, CDA. Upon earning this certification, as a junior or senior in ECE 4, students will be able to apply for the following positions in any preschool in the nation: lead teacher, VPK teacher or Head Start teacher.

FACS Essentials provides an opportunity for acquiring basic life skills required after graduating high school. Emphasis is on family, employability skills, adolescent development, introduction to textiles, interiors and design, financial management, challenges of parenting, establishing healthy relationships, and creating a foundation for healthy lifestyles and nutrition. Students will research colleges and careers and learn how to purchase a car and rent an apartment. They gain experience hand sewing and cooking. Through FACS Essentials, students will have the opportunity to earn the ServSafe Food Handler and Manager certification.
