AVID - Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID is a national program that operates with teacher-facilitators to support student development of academic skills and behaviors in an inquiry-based design. Students are taught how to learn; note-taking, organization, time management, and critical thinking are addressed throughout the program. In collaboration with others, students learn to reflect and question and work together to solve problems. These skills and behaviors are taught in support of academic subject matter through activities such as tutorials, collaborative study groups, Socratic Seminars, and Philosophical Chairs.
AVID focuses on high expectations for all students. Skills taught in AVID help students overcome socioeconomic challenges and personal adversity. Results clearly demonstrate the positive impact the AVID program has on the students it serves.
