• Dual Enrollment - General Information

    Eligibility

    Students must meet the following eligibility criteria for Dual Enrollment: 

    • Be in enrolled in a Florida Public, Private, Charter, or Home Education Program
    • Have a 3.0 unweighted grade point average 
    • Pass the appropriate section of the Postsecondary Educational Readiness Test (PERT) or have the appropriate scores on the SAT or the ACT (not more than two years old).
    • Permission from the parent/guardian and high school principal and/or school counselor.
    • Must have an understanding that the amount of work necessary to succeed in dual enrollment courses will be greater than in high school courses.

    Steps

    Students must take the following steps to enroll in dual enrollment courses.  

    • Step 1: Follow HCC's dual enrollment steps.
    • Step 2: Review course options and descriptions on the HCC website to see what interests you.  Make sure you choose an appropriate course and meet the prerequisite. Then, search for Class Sections to make sure the course you want to take is going to be offered.  Once you receive your confirmation email from HCC and they have received your required documents, you may register for classes or you may meet with an HCC advisor to register for classes.
    • Step 3:  Bring a copy of your DE schedule to your councelor in the guidance office to activate your textbook authorization code.  This will allow you to get your textbooks for free. 

    Credits

    Dual enrollment college credit will transfer to any Florida public college or university offering that course prefix and number and must be treated as though taken at the receiving institution. However, if students do not, upon high school graduation, attend the same college or university where they earned the dual enrollment credit, application of transfer credit to general education, prerequisite, and degree programs may vary at the receiving institution.

     

    Deadlines

    Wharton High School Deadline for submitting authorization form B is November 19 for Spring semester and April 8 for summer semester

    Course Selection

    How to choose courses:

    • Students may take up to 10 credits per semester during the Fall, Spring, & Summer semesters.  Maximum of 30 credits total per year.  
    • You can search for class sections available at HCC for the term you wish to enroll HERE.
    • DE/college courses are all a semester in length.  
    • Students can choose academic core or elective courses based on their academic interests.
    • Students can choose courses that will go towards the CORE GPA that will be factored into the college recalculated GPA.
    • Students can choose courses that meet the college major requirements at the college he/she may attend.
    • Students can choose courses that meet 'General Education' Requirements at the college he/she may attend.

    Example: Click HERE to learn about the Florida State University "Degree in Three" program.  The “Degree in Three” is a special program designed to assist students who wish to graduate in less than four years. It is most appropriate for students who enter the university with college credits earned through dual enrollment or through credit by exam, especially if those credits relate to their majors of choice.

    Go to HCC's website to view the Course Catalog, which includes course descriptions.  You can also view the courses available during the term your child wishes to enroll.

    • Public Speaking, Exploring Entrepreneurship, Art, Criminal Justice, Photography, Financial Accounting, Nutrition & Drugs
    • Humanities, Intro to Sociology, Intro to Philosophy, Social Problems & Solutions, Ethics
    • Intro to Environmental Science, Human Anatomy & Physiology, Intro to Chemistry + Lab, Astronomy, Fundamentals of Physics 
    • English Comp 1, English Comp 2, Intro to Literature, etc.
    • Explorations in Mathematics, College Algebra, Topics in Mathematics, Pre-calculus, Elementary Statistics, etc…
    • Intro to Computers & Technology, Java Programming, Intro to Networking, Game Development, Programming Logic
    • Elementary German, Elementary Spanish, American Sign Language
    • Early American History, Government, Intro to Survey, Principles of Macroeconomics, Principles of Microeconomics, etc.

    Textbooks

    Required textbooks are provided at no cost to the student.  However, the student is responsible for textbook affiliated costs for licensing fees or electronic media access which are password protected or are one-time access codes and cannot be returned to the district as its property for reissue to another student.

     Students must provide a copy of their HCC dual enrollment schedule to Ms. Rachel Perna in the front office to obtain a textbook authorization code which allows them to order their textbooks at no cost.​

     

    Early Admissions

    Early admissions is a form of dual enrollment. Students are admitted through the early admissions option of dual enrollment when they register at HCC as a full-time student for two consecutive semesters (12 credits each semester) during their senior year of high school.
