HISTORY OF THE SPARTANS

Richard C. Spoto

Richard C. Spoto
Spoto High School is named in honor of Mr. Richard C. Spoto. Mr. Spoto was born, raised, and educated in Hillsborough County. He attended the University of Tampa where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Social Studies and Health Education. He earned his Master's degree in Administration and Supervision at the University of Florida. Mr. Spoto was with the School District of Hillsborough County for 31 years. Richard C. Spoto High School opened its doors on August 3, 2006, when Mr. Clyde Trathowen, Spoto's first principal, welcomed one thousand students.

Mr. Spoto passed away on January 31, 2010. During the last four years of his life, he was active and present at the school, attending many events and interacting with the student body and staff. He left his mark on Spoto High School and is missed by students and staff. We will always remember him for the outstanding individual he was and the pride he felt in having our school named after him.
