About the Media Center
Welcome to the Palm River Elementary Media Center page!
The Media Center is the Hub of the School!
About our Media Specialist: Hello, I am Ms. Whitley, proud Media Specialist at Palm River Elementary School. This is my third year as the Media Specialist at Palm River Elementary.
What do I love about being a Media Specialist? My students and books! My Morning Show Crew gets me excited in the mornings. Also, I am always excited about the SSYRA book lists. Also, I love it when our Champions are happy to come to the media center and I love talking to our Champions about books, especially the SSYRA books. The SSYRA Book that really affected me: The SSYRA book Frenzy by Robert Lettrick from 2016-2017. All I will say is .... Squirrel!!!
My favorite 2022-2023 SSYRA book: Amari and the Night Brothers!
The 2023-2024 SSYRA books I have read: 1) Better With Butter by Victoria Piontek. 2) Solimar: The Sword of the Monarchs by Pam Munoz Ryan. What am I reading? Currently, I am reading The Raven Heir by Stephanie Burgis.
I have read: The Black Queen by Jumata Emill. I loved this book! It definitely had a plot twist and was a great book. I met the author at YA by the Bay 2023. I am also reading Women of the Post by Joshunda Sanders.
What is my favorite HCPS event each year? The S.L.A.M. Showcase. (I think I am more excited than my students!) We start promoting SLAM in August, when students return. We encourage them to read the SSYRA books, choose one to give their interpretation in the form of a visual representation (2D, 3D, or video) and get started. Our Champions worked on their projects for months, during our SLAM Lunch Bunch, leading up to the event. It takes commitment, creativity and a lot of patience. Palm River was represented last year by a very dedicated and hard-working group of Champions and on April 11, 2023, they were able to see their artwork and the artwork of other HCPS students showcased at SLAM. Our Champions also met several SSYRA book authors, including author Greg Neri and he autographed copies of his book, Polo Cowboy for them. Thank you to our HCPS Library Media Services Department for making S.L.A.M. a memorable event for us each year! For more information on SLAM click here: https://www.hillsboroughschools.org/slam
THANK YOU Bess the Book Bus and Ms. Jenn for stopping by to give us books!
