School History

  • Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) LaVoy Exceptional Center provides education and support for students ages Kindergarten to 22, with a wide range of disabilities. Named after DeForrest LaVoy, a former supervisor of Exceptional Student Education in HCPS. LaVoy has been providing education and support for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Visual Impairments, Physical Handicaps, Emotional/Behavioral Disabilities, and Significant Cognitive Disabilities since 1972.

At LaVoy, we strive to create a warm and inviting educational environment where we provide individualized instruction equipping students to reach their full potential. We presume competency and support every student in becoming as independent as possible. Our students learn in a fun, creative, inclusive environment where they are encouraged to embrace who they are. Our staff is trained to bring out the best in every student through trauma-informed approaches that stress comfort over control through targeted interventions, behaviorally and academically.
