• American Sign Language (ASL)

    Beginning ASL students will learn about comparing and contrasting Deaf culture with their own culture. Introduction of finger spelling, being able to introduce themselves and others. Demonstrate knowledge of signed vocabulary.

    Advanced students will focus on building their vocabulary of signs and acquiring knowledge of the natural alphabet and basic structure and grammar of the language. Students learn the language through lessons presented in context with activities. Cultural awareness and cross-cultural adjustment skills are major components of this course.

    Computer Science (CS) Discoveries

    This course aims to empower students to create authentic artifacts and engage with computer science as a medium for creativity, communication, problem-solving, and fun. CS Discoveries takes a broad lens to computer science by covering topics such as programming, physical computing, web development, design, and data. The course inspires students as they build their own websites, apps, games, and physical computing devices.

    Entrepreneurship I

    Students use entrepreneurial skills and mindset to turn an innovative solution to a problem into a validated business opportunity. Students take a lean startup approach to researching and testing their ideas; building out a lean canvas to support their business opportunity validation. Students also put together customer and competitor profiles, marketing campaigns, and financial analysis to support their claims about the feasibility of their business idea. Towards the end of the school year, students have opportunities to pitch their business opportunities to judges in local, regional, and national competitions.

    Band

    Band consists of Band 1, Band 2, Band 3, and Instrument Techniques. All Band students (6th, 7th, and 8th grade) will learn how to read, compose, and perform music that they love playing traditional band instruments (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, tenar saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba). Instrument Technique students will learn how to play percussion instruments (snare drum, bass drum, quad toms, xylophone, timpani, and multiple auxiliary perscussions (tambourine, cabasa, slide whistle, cow bell, triangle, wood block, etc.).

    Band 1: Incoming 6th graders

    Band 2: Beginning 7th and 8th graders

    Band 3: Second Year 8th grade students

    Band is a performance-based class, and students must perform live for audiences. They will perform as a band, as a group, and individually at recitals. It is very important that students rent an instrument and commit to practice regularly to achieve their performance potential.

    Physical Education (6th grade)

    In 6th grade, the curriculum consists of various areas of physical education. Activities include four group dances per year, one every nine weeks (line dance, hip-hop, square dance, and mixed cultural dance). Other activities include circuit training, an obstacle course, a University of Florida Healthy Eating program and lessons on nutrition and fitness. First Tee of Tampa conducts a three-week golf camp with students. At the end of the three weeks, forty students are selected to go on a field trip to the First Tee of Tampa Bay at Rogers Park golf course to participate in activities they learned during the camp.

    Physical Education (7th and 8th grade)

    Physical Education (P.E.) at Young Middle Magnet School is designed to increase students' fitness levels, teamwork skills, and to learn all the benefits of playing sports. P.E. will also teach students all the rules, vocabulary and long-term skills that sports or activities will give them by being involved. 7th and 8th grade P.E. sports include but are not limited to racquet sports, basketball, flag rugby, ultimate Frisbee, flag football, floor hockey, volleyball, track, soccer, and various cultural games. Students will also spend time learning hands-only CPR and teen safety and mental health in a classroom setting.
