Young Middle Magnet School Academy of Science and Engineering is in East Tampa's College Hill neighborhood. The school mascot is Buffaloes, and our motto is "Engineering (+) Change". At Young, the curriculum focuses on inquiry-based problem solving, through a STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) approach to learning utilizing the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum. Students explore topics that connect with the world around them, while exploring potential solutions through creating apps, entrepreneurship, coding, and other creative pathways. Students investigate, design and research real-world problems. We focus on Global Planting, Global Sustainability and Global Engineering--engaging students in real-world, hands-on opportunities. The goal is to inspire students to think creatively to solve problems that exist in the world today.
Nathan B. Young was opened as a Junior High School in January of 1964. Young Middle School reopened as a Math, Science and Technology Magnet School in 1999. In July of 2011, the theme was changed to Creative Science Centre along with neighboring Lockhart Elementary School. The two schools now serve as the Creative Science Center Upper and Lower Campuses. The school was named in honor of Nathan B. Young, a Florida educator, who served as President to Florida A & M University from 1901-1923. He is truly remembered for stating, "Young People, Prepare Yourselves, for the future is yours...if you are ready for it."
