ABOUT THE JOHN GLENN TOP GUN ACADEMY
The Academy’s mission is to provide unique educational experiences for students to study engineering, science, math, computer science, robotics and how they interface with technology to benefit us here on Earth. The goal is to increase students' knowledge and awareness of the technology involved in engineering, space missions, national defense and aerospace science. This information will positively affect their future and help keep our nation successful in a global environment.
The theme of our school is aerospace and aviation. This theme has allowed our students to be exposed to the latest information in science, engineering and space technology. We are ready to take the next steps in preparing and inspiring our students for careers in the ever-expanding STEM fields.
Stewart is the only NASA Explorer middle school on Florida’s west coast. To expand our student’s interest in STEM and space science, we induct students into the John Glenn Top Gun Academy (JGTGA). This ties into our Project Lead the Way engineering and Flight and Space programs, which equip our students with valuable skills preparing them for an array of engineering and aerospace careers.
These sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students are selected because of their interest in STEM/aerospace, outstanding grades, leadership ability, behavior and initiative.
Stewart is a Title I school near downtown Tampa and we have more than 20 very successful years as a magnet school focused on science, technology, engineering and math.

Help Our Scholars Soar
To implement this project, we need your sponsorship so that we can take the John Glenn Top Gun Academy students on an authentic learning experience for trips such as a trip to Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and later a n overnight trip to Kennedy Space Center. There they will meet astronauts, take a NASA VIP tour the Space Shuttle launch area and the Space Shuttle Atlantis, and tour the new exhibit of Heroes and Legends.
In the past, our scholars participated in developing, engineering and building projects to fly on a weather balloon they launched at Kennedy Space Center. We so appreciate your support and welcome your contribution to our effort to help the next generation of leaders accomplish the dreams of their future. We hope you can be part of our efforts to reach this goal. We have approx. 100 students who would benefit and are seeking $125 per student for scholarships. We also have a tax exemption number for your donation.
There are many other real-world activities, trips and experiences our students participate in during the school year to acquaint them with careers in the STEM fields (as seen in the photos).
Thank you for allowing us to share our vision for the future for very deserving middle school students. We hope you can be part of our efforts to help our students reach for the stars. Please feel free to call or email me at (813) 205-7051 or lynnmcdan@hotmail.com.
