School History

  • Philip Shore Elementary is located in the heart of Ybor City, and is named after former school board member, Philip Shore.

Philipe Costa (translation- Philip Shore) came to America from Sicily in 1895 and settled in New York’s Little Italy. There, he sold vegetables for a while before moving to Port Tampa in 1898. Finding an opportunity to become a businessman in this new land of opportunity, he opened up his own grocery store. It did so well that within two years, he established the Philip Shore Shipping Company and moved it to the Port of Tampa. The man who had immigrated from Italy with only the clothes on his back had quickly become a well-established and well-respected businessman and had quickly entrenched himself in the life of the local community that he now lived in.

In 1917, Philip Shore was appointed to the Hillsborough County School Board, and as a school board member, Shore championed the need to build a school in Ybor City, and the school board agreed.  In 1922, a school bearing his name was opened, and the school you see here has been in operation ever since. Over the years it has served as a high school, a sixth grade center, and an elementary school.  In 1998, Philip Shore Elementary became a magnet school for the visual, performing, and communication arts. Today, it is recognized as one of the top schools in all of Tampa. Philip Shore Elementary Magnet School for the Arts has also received recognition from the Magnet Schools of America as a magnet school of distinction and excellence.

With such innovative programs, Philip Shore Elementary remains a beacon of education in Ybor City as it has since 1922.
