Clemmie Ross James Elementary School was first opened in 1966 as Williams Elementary under the leadership of William Kay. The school was designed to serve the diverse population in East Tampa. It was named in honor of R.R. Williams, a prominent African American physician. In 1996, the school closed and reopened in 1997 as the Area IV Director’s Office. In 1998, the school opened as James Exceptional Center servicing Pre-kindergarten – 12th grade students. In 2004, the school became James K-8. On Sunday, April 10, 2005, the school was dedicated in honor of educator Clemmie Ross James and was renamed Clemmie Ross James K-8 School. In 2006, the school was changed to Clemmie Ross James Elementary K-5. Clemmie Ross James was a pioneer educator. Her role as a friend and mother figure influenced the lives of hundreds of people. This dynamic lady was one of Tampa’s early advocates of humaneness for people. She worked diligently with several civic and equal rights organizations. She was also a volunteer political worker.
James Elementary currently serves Kindergarten through fifth grade students. We offer varied curriculum that meet the diverse needs of all our students because at James Elementary we educate the whole child.
