Exceptional Child Center "DD" was named after a local special education pioneer by the name of Ida Veronka Caminiti on May 8th, 1985.
She was a woman who went door to door asking parents of students with special needs if they were keeping their kids home due to transportation issues. Ida presented her findings to the School Board, but was told there wasn't enough money. Writing 2 letters, one to a friend complaining about the superintendent and the other to the superintendent himself, she sent them out only to find that they were mixed up, and the letter of complaint landed on the head of the School Board's desk. Within weeks, the board began planning for a change.
In a letter to her friend after having her name nominated to be selected for the new school's name, she wrote: "Thank you for your kind efforts in my behalf. Actually, just to know that my labor in Christ's vineyard is appreciated by you, is enough to warm my heart."
She died 8 days before the Hillsborough County School Board voted unanimously to name the new school after her at the age of 86.
