J. R. Brooker Elementary School was named for a pioneer resident of Brandon, Joseph Richard Brooker, a builder and large landowner in the area. ~The school opened in 1961. ~Students chose green and gold as their school colors to reflect the colors of the professional soccer team, the Tampa Bay Rowdies. ~Brooker was renovated in 1985, 2000, and 2006.  Our mascot was the Brooker Brave, but in 2019, students and staff voted to change our mascot to “Brooker Bolts." ~The school colors were also changed to royal blue, a brighter green, and a trim of white. You will still see the color yellow at times too.
