Tampa, Fl. (June 14, 2023) – Today, Terry Connor, Hillsborough County Public Schools’ (HCPS) Chief Academic Officer and Deputy Superintendent, was named the new superintendent of Sarasota County Schools.

After an exhaustive interview process, board members with Sarasota County Schools chose Terry Connor because of his proven track record of strengthening the academic experience for all students with an emphasis on rigorous instruction.

Since coming to Hillsborough County Public Schools in the Spring of 2020, Terry Connor has led the district’s efforts to facilitate curriculum, instruction, and assessment support services; all while monitoring student achievement.

In 2022, Hillsborough County Public Schools was recognized as the highest-performing school district among the nation's largest urban districts in 4th-grade Reading and Math, according to the Nation's Report Card (NAEP). Hispanic students in HCPS also achieved the #2 spot in 4th Grade Reading and Math and #2 for 8th Grade Reading.

During Connor’s tenure in HCPS, he led the effort to expand dual language and Spanish immersion programs in the district while also increasing access to accelerated coursework for all students.

“I am thrilled for Sarasota County; the school board could not have selected a better leader,” said Addison Davis, Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent. “Terry has contributed significantly to our work here in Hillsborough County and has helped create conditions that allow our students and teachers to make great strides. We will miss Terry but know that his student-centered leadership will drive positive progress for our Florida Gulf Coast neighbors.”

Prior to coming to Hillsborough County Public Schools, Terry Connor served as Chief Academic Officer and Chief of Secondary Education in Clay County and a principal and teacher in Duval County. He has a master’s degree in Administration and Management from Nova Southeastern University and a bachelor’s from the University of North Florida.
