Tampa, Fl. (November 14, 2023) – Leaders with Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) are excited to partner with the City of Tampa for a new outdoor space that will encourage a healthy lifestyle for students and community members.
On Wednesday, November 15, at 9 a.m., district leaders will be joined by city officials for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Liberty Middle School. The school is located at 17400 Commerce Park Blvd., Tampa.
The District created a turf field with a metal covering, added courts that can be used for pickleball, volleyball, basketball, or tennis, plus built a small building that houses an athletic training room, restrooms, offices, and a storage room. The City of Tampa contributed $500,000 to the project. There is a joint use agreement to allow Liberty Middle School students to utilize the new space during the school day and then open the facility to the community after school hours.
Superintendent Van Ayres, School Board Members, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor, school staff, and students will be on hand to celebrate the completion of this work, which is a testament to the ongoing, positive relationship between the City and the District.
"When students improve their physical health, they have more energy to participate in class and it improves their memory, plus it also helps them build strong bones and muscles. We are so grateful for this partnership with Mayor Castor and her team at the City. This truly shows how combining our collective resources can have an enormous impact on our entire community," said Superintendent Van Ayres.
