Tampa, Fl. (April 15, 2023) – Eight months after welcoming students, Hillsborough County Public Schools’ newest Magnet school, Dorothy C. York PreK-8 Innovation Academy will have its dedication ceremony this Saturday, April 15.
Located in the Waterset Community off Highway 301, Dorothy C. York has around 1,300 students enrolled. The school engages students with an internationally minded focus while also offering art and other opportunities to explore their creative side. The site prides itself on its STEM and International Studies programs, and fosters a love of learning through a hands-on, project-based approach.
Its namesake, Dorothy Carter York, was a dedicated teacher for 45 years, teaching English at Blake and Hillsborough High Schools. York also worked with the University of South Florida’s Project Upward Bound as an Adjunct Professor at Hillsborough Community College, and tutored children for free. She passed away on July 29, 2012.
In attendance this Saturday for the 10 a.m. dedication will be York’s daughter, Liz York-Cohen, who says her mother dedicated her life to ensuring children had every chance to succeed.
The school is located at 5995 Covington Garden Dr., Apollo Beach.
