Tampa, Fl. (April 27, 2023) – The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced the names of the first group of winners in the 68th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Three seniors from Hillsborough County Public Schools have won Corporate Sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations.

The district is excited to recognize the following students:

  • Ria Kalaria, Strawberry Crest High School

    • Probable career field: Biomedicine

      • National Merit Walgreen Co. Scholarship

  • Jeremy Ehrenpreis, Sickles High School

    • Probable career field: Materials Science

      • National Merit Geico Scholarship

  • LeAnn Ho, King High School

    • Probable career field: Neurosurgery

      • National Merit Walgreen Co. Scholarship

These scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage.

“Our students continue to excel with rigorous coursework and impress us with the tremendous efforts they put forth every single day. I want to extend my congratulations to these scholars for achieving their goals and being recognized with this incredible honor. The scholarships remove a financial burden for these families, and we thank the corporations involved for putting our students first,” said Superintendent Addison Davis.

Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $1,000 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.

This is the first announcement of National Merit Scholars in 2023 by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The recipients of National Merit $2500 Scholarships will be named on May 10, and winners of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards on June 7 and July 10. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, more than 7,140 academic champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $28 million.
