Tampa, FL (January 29, 2025) – Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) is proud to announce that its fourth-grade students ranked second amongst other large districts for reading, according to the 2024 “Nation’s Report Card” released today by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).

The “Nation’s Report Card” is a congressionally mandated assessment of fourth and eighth graders, conducted in all 50 states, measuring long-term trends in student performance over time. Through the Trial Urban District Assessment (TUDA), HCPS was compared to 26 large, diverse school districts, including Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami-Dade.

HCPS fourth grade students also ranked 4th in math, outperforming their peers in comparable large districts across the nation.

The exceptional performance of HCPS students underscores the district’s dedication to providing high-quality education for all learners while driving efforts to ensure that no student is left behind.

“We are encouraged by our students’ progress but recognize there is more work to be done,” said Van Ayres, Superintendent of Schools. “We need to keep working towards goals that help every student succeed.”
