            College Preparatory Leadership Magnet Academies

Our College Preparatory Leadership Magnet Academies are application based programs, please apply during an application window, on the School District of Hillsborough County website (https://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/doc/221).  These are the recommended pathways for the magnet programs offered at Jefferson High School.  Students enrolled in the Leadership Academies are required to take Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and/or Industry Certification courses to prepare them for their future careers.

The final courses in each of the Magnet pathways of study may involve a senior internship, externship, competitions to earn scholarships, capstone leadership project, engage with local community leaders, establish partnerships with professional clubs, community service opportunities, field trips, and on-the-job training.

All academy students are expected to demonstrate behaviors and values in accordance with Academy Principles: Respect, Responsibility, Excellence, and Integrity and must maintain a minimum 2.5 district GPA and 3.0 Academy GPA.

 

Business and Finance Academy

The Business & Finance Leadership Academy is a four-year program that offers students the opportunity to participate in an enhanced curriculum that provides practical business and financial knowledge, challenging coursework, leadership, and on-the-job experiences.  This program provides an opportunity to engage in the Finance Advisory Committee, DECA involvement, Virtual Enterprises, and NAF curriculum, which supports students with career planning, job shadowing, paid internships, as well as a strong foundation for college and career applications. 

Certifications offered: Social Media Strategist◦ and Windows Operating Systems.◦

*All Business and Finance Academy students are required to be a part of DECA.  It is recommended that students take HOPE and Fine Arts courses online.  Additionally, it is recommended that students take as many AP and Business courses, such as Computer Fundamentals, Entrepreneurship, and Sports Marketing as are available and can fit in the schedule. 

**Summer Externship is conducted between junior and senior year.

 

 

Criminal Justice Academy

The Criminal Justice Leadership Academy is a four-year program that offers students the opportunity to study constitutional law, court procedures, crime scene investigation, forensic science, international law, criminal law, and the techniques involved in fingerprinting and photographing for evidence collection.  Additionally, students will have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers and participate in curriculum-oriented field trips which include state and federal courthouses, FBI, HCSO 911 communications center, law school, and criminal justice programs.

Culinary Arts Academy

The Culinary Arts Leadership Academy is a four-year program that equips students with college-ready, professional skills needed to excel in life. Students move through the curriculum from the most basic level to the most advanced level with daily application of their acquired culinary skills. Students will be inspired creatively, challenged, and supported while studying culinary techniques, management, sanitation, safety, and world cuisine.

Certifications Offered: Windows Operating System◦, National Registry Food ANSI Food Safety Manager◦, Serve Safe Food Protection Manager◦, and Pro Start Certification of Achievement.◦

Additionally, it is suggested that Culinary Arts students take business courses to earn additional industry certifications which connect to their program of study, such as Computer Fundamentals and Entrepreneurship.   

Law Academy

The Law Leadership Academy is a four-year program that offers students the opportunity to study constitutional law, court procedures, international law, criminal law, and participate in mock trials. Students are also exposed to a wide variety of legal expertise through guest speakers such as local, state, and federal judges, DEA agents, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys. Students also participate in various curriculum-oriented field trips.

*All Law Academy students are required to take AP Government and Politics.  It is recommended that students take as many AP, Criminal Justice, and Law courses as are available and can fit in the schedule. These courses include Criminal Justice I and II. Additionally, Law students should take Economics on FLVS.net.

Maritime and Marine Environmental Science Academy

The Maritime and Marine Environmental Science Leadership Academy is a four-year program that offers students an introduction to the business and commerce of shipping in the global marketplace as well as marine studies. The Academy introduces students to the maritime industry with topics that include basic vessel knowledge, cybersecurity, admiralty law, port and shipping operations, port security, navigation, and seamanship skills. Marine Science topics include physical, chemical and biological oceanography, environmental science, ocean literacy, and stewardship. Our partnership with Port Tampa Bay and others allows networking opportunities that enrich student awareness of maritime careers while preparing them to be college-ready and equipped with the professional skills needed to excel.
