Radon Testing

By mid-November, we will complete testing for radon in all 230 schools.

Testing is required by law for some schools, but we are taking the extra voluntary step to test all of our schools. Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is in soil all over Florida, and it can make its way into buildings from the ground unless precautions are taken.

Here in Hillsborough County Public Schools, the health and safety of our employees and students is a top priority. We are required to test 5% of habitable space in each school/site (classrooms, media centers, conference rooms, offices, etc.) but we use a stricter standard by testing 20% of each building.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends mitigating spaces that test 4.0 pCi/L or higher, and requires mitigating spaces that test 100 pCi/L or higher.

Follow-up testing is also mandated within five years after completing the initial testing, we will begin the re-testing process in 2021 to meet State requirements by year five. The purpose of conducting further testing is to confirm indoor radon levels have not changed.

If our tests find any radon levels above EPA standards (4.0 pCi/L or higher), we will fix the issues immediately, regardless of the cost. Correcting the issue, also called mitigation, can consist of a variety of steps including sealing cracks in the foundation or walls, and changing the air flow and ventilation in the room.

Families and staff at each school will be notified by email and text message when results are received. Please refer to this webpage for updates and more information, including frequently asked questions, the latest test results, and a link to ask us a question.

Just as our district has become a statewide leader in security and a statewide leader in academics, we are committed to becoming a statewide leader in student safety.

Thank you for your support as we continuously improve our student safety efforts.
