Students meeting eligibility under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, have two (2) options for enrollment: school of origin (the school last attended before the loss of housing) OR the neighborhood school (the zoned school based upon the address of where the student slept the previous night) (HCPS Policy 5111.01). Students enrolling in a HCPS for the first time DO NOT have a school of origin. They must enroll at the neighborhood school or apply for School Choice, with the understanding that school transportation may not be provided.
Students meeting McKinney-Vento eligibility have the right to immediate school enrollment and attendance, even without the required enrollment documentation or school records. A thirty (30) day grace period will be given in which the school social worker and other school personnel will assist parents with obtaining necessary enrollment documents (HCPS Policy 5112).
A student who meets McKinney-Vento eligibility will be referred to the school social worker to assess for specific needs and referred to the H.E.L.P Office to receive program services.
For all students enrolling in a Hillsborough County Public School, including students meeting McKinney-Vento eligibility, the following school locator can be used to find the student’s neighborhood school by using the student’s residential address (where the student slept the night prior to enrollment):
