The History of Metropolitan Ministries Academy (Charter School) to Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School (Hillsborough County Public Schools) to Patricia Sullivan Partnership School
The History of Metropolitan Ministries Academy (Charter School) to Metropolitan Ministries Partnership School (Hillsborough County Public Schools) In June, 1995 a decision was made by the agency leadership led by its Executive Director to establish an elementary school at Metropolitan Ministries. The decision was approved by the Board of Directors.
In November, 1996, the Board of Directors approved a decision of agency leadership to apply to the School Board of Hillsborough County for a startup grant to establish a charter school at Metropolitan Ministries.
On March 13, 1997, Metropolitan Ministries received a letter from Donnie Evans, Director, District Reform Initiatives, for the Hillsborough County Public Schools that read: Congratulations! On March 4, 1997, the School Board of Hillsborough County voted to approve your application for a Charter School to open in the fall, 1997.
The date of the opening of the charter school was later changed to the fall of 1998.
The first principal of the charter school at Metropolitan Ministries was hired on June 6, 1998 and assisted in the development of the school and its opening in the fall of 1998.
On August 7, 1998, the Academy, a charter school for children from homeless families residing at Metropolitan Ministries, opened its doors for the first time to welcome 28 students to an educational first. Our purpose was to nurture as well as teach, assist rather than demand, explore rather than follow, foster independence rather than obedience, look for expansion rather than restriction, and become involved rather than isolated.
Metropolitan Ministries Academy served the needs of over 1000 students from 1998-2009. In 2009 the Academy Board made the decision to join forces with the Hillsborough County Public Schools to become a partnership school.
In August 2015, the school moved to a new building on Florida Avenue, the Patricia J. Sullivan Partnership School.
